Britney Spears was arrested on Wednesday night in Southern California on suspicion of a DUI, a spokesperson for the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office told The Cut. According to jail records, Spears was taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol at around 9:30 p.m. and released early Thursday morning.

A spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol told The Cut that Spears was pulled over for allegedly “driving erratically at a high rate of speed” on the California freeway and “showed signs of impairment.” Per the spokesperson, Spears submitted to a series of sobriety tests and was taken into custody “on suspicion of driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs.” Chemical test results are still pending, the spokesperson said.

Spears is scheduled to appear in court on May 4, per arrest records.

In a statement to CNN, a spokesperson for Spears called the incident “unfortunate” and “completely inexcusable.” “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” the spokesperson said. “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.” The rep added that Spears’s “boys are going to be spending time with her,” and “her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”

As of Thursday morning, Spears’s Instagram page had been deactivated.

The Cut has reached out to representatives for Spears and law-enforcement officials for comment and will update this post if we hear back.
