H&M is releasing the next iteration of its studio collection, a slightly more fashion-forward grouping than their regular offerings. While its last capsule invoked the ’80s, this time around, the brand is making clothes with “weirdness” in mind, according to creative adviser Ann-Sofie Johansson. That looks like asymmetrical shirts, mesh, bow-adorned skirts, funnel-neck jackets, and shoes with ruching galore.
Here’s what I tried from the collection and what to know before shopping.
I felt like the mayor of cozy town in this sweater. I loved the way this merino-blend top felt (0 percent scratchy and rather plush) and the way it fit. I sized up for a more oversize, roomy look. Meanwhile, the matching scarf made me feel incredibly dainty. I would recommend, though, securing it in place with some clips or bobby pins as the satin material can make it slide off quite easily.

Printed Scarf
This leather jacket made me feel so cool but unfortunately felt like it was swallowing me whole. That’s partially my fault because I sized up like I typically do in coats, when in reality I wish I would have sized down. There’s enough material here to make the proportions look interesting as is.

This skirt is my absolute favorite piece from the collection, a fun marriage between sporty and girly. This fit true to size and hit just above my hip bones. It paired perfectly with some sleek black boots and a sweater for a more comfortable vibe, but could also easily be elevated with some heels and a form-fitting blouse.

I really liked this cardigan — the fit was flattering as was the neckline — but it has snap closures on the backside that I wish weren’t there at all. They’re not super inconvenient but did unsnap each time I put the garment on. This also fits true to size.

Wool Cardigan
This coat felt simultaneously punk and chic. I got my regular size and wish I had sized down as the chest area poofed out a little when buttoned up.

Hooded Peplum Jacket
I felt so glamorous in this shirt. The neckline is intentionally asymmetrical, and the sleeves were long enough to pull over my hands, which I’m currently hyperfixated on. The material is body-contouring but not too tight. I’m wearing my regular size.

Draped Top
I was surprised by how stiff this jacket felt before I remembered it’s meant to look like it’s been painted on. This isn’t normally a top I would reach for, but I loved how snatched and sturdy this felt on. I wore a size larger than normal and wish I had stuck with my true sizing.

This purse is my new obsession. It’s made of 100 percent leather and the perfect size and shape to fit my phone, wallet, and 15 lip glosses when I go out.

I got this dress (which has a zipper running up the front rather than the back, heads up) in my regular size and wished I had sized it down for a more tapered look. I do love how it hits right above the knee, though, especially with a pair of tall boots.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of materials in the collection and how well most of the items fit. That said, I’d recommend sticking to your regular size on most items and sizing down on garments in which you’d like a more tailored look.
