Sean Penn won his third Oscar on Sunday for his supporting role in One Battle After Another but apparently couldn’t show up. Why? Well, two anonymous sources told the New York Times he might be in Ukraine.

Though he’s best known as an award-winning actor and actually not shitty former husband of Madonna, you may have heard that Penn is also a humanitarian crusader. He has personally rescued Hurricane Katrina victims via boat, served as the first non-Haitian ambassador-at-large to Haiti for his earthquake-relief efforts, and once mined his connections with heads of state to free a Brooklyn man from a Bolivian prison.

He’s also a longtime supporter of Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In 2022, he spent time in Kiev filming a documentary about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine through Zelenskyy’s eyes. During one of his visits, he gifted one of his Oscars to Zelenskyy, saying he could return it after the war was won. Maybe Zelenskyy will get this next one, too?
