On Sunday, a woman fired shots into Rihanna’s Los Angeles home while the singer was inside, according to NBC. Police told the L.A. Times the woman fired multiple rounds from inside her car with an AR-15-style rifle, at least one of which penetrated a wall of the home. The woman then drove off, fleeing the scene. No injuries were reported.
The suspect, who was identified Monday as 35-year-old Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, was pulled over by police about 30 minutes after the first 911 call came in, per the L.A. Times. A search of her vehicle allegedly turned up an assault rifle and seven casings.
On Tuesday, Ortiz was charged with attempted murder as well as ten felony counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm and three felony counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling or camper. According to a criminal complaint obtained by People, the alleged shooting was “willful, deliberate, and premeditated,” and Ortiz is accused of going to Rihanna’s home in an “attempt to murder” her. At a court hearing Tuesday, Ortiz’s arraignment was reportedly set for later this month, and her bail was set at $1.875 million. Ortiz faces up to life in prison if convicted, Los Angeles County district attorney Nathan J. Hochman said.
In a press conference, Hochman said that Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, the couple’s three children, Rihanna’s mother, and two staff members were at the home at the time of the incident. Ortiz is also accused of firing at a neighboring residence where two people were inside, Hochman added.
A motive for the incident is still under investigation, but police said they are aware of bizarre social-media posts Ortiz made in recent months that mentioned Rihanna. In a video in January, per ABC7, Ortiz apparently said Rihanna “wants to kill me.”
A source close to Rihanna told People the incident was “terrifying,” but “thankfully everyone is safe.” “Even with a great security team in place, it’s scary to realize that something like this can still happen,” the source said. “Rihanna heard the shots but was initially confused about what happened. She doesn’t understand why someone would target her family.”
A public defender appointed to represent Ortiz did not immediately respond to request for comment.
The Cut has reached out to police, as well as representatives for Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, and will update this post if we hear back.
